from nbc news, new york. yes, the sun is up and now we can see all the damage caused by superstorm sandy. rivetiepresentativiveting video. some estimates for the east coast reaching $20 billion worth of havoc. that is rough to watch. thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. unprecedented damage and destruction all over the east coast in the wake of sandy. the hardest hit is new york city. >> three people were injured overnight when flood waters made it difficult to get on the scene of a fire. >> we have live team coverage

this morning, but we will begin with danielle leigh in cape may, new jersey. >> reporter: people are trying to get back to normal and laying out picnic tables and chairs. that said, the threat from hurricane sandy has passed. there is danger out there throughout most of the northeast. the communities are climbing out of a watery mess. sandy beat the eastern seaboard with a vengeance. >> we don't know if we have bodies out there. that is why we are on the road. >> reporter: streets that look like rivers and landmarks ripped apart have crews working over time today. >> i know people woke up to devastation. >> i was on the phone with fema at 2:00 a.m. to answer the questions they needed answered

to get that designation. >> reporter: the atlantic boardwalk once packed with tourists is filled with debris and the roller coaster is surrounded by ocean. beach communities are digging out from the dunes that once protected them. >> it will be a while cleaning up from this one. >> reporter: the lights are still out in the city that never sleeps. babies and elderly were evacuated from a new york city hospital when the back-up generator failed. tunnels, subways and streets are under water thanks to a 13 foot storm surge that pounded new york. >> make no mistake, this was a devastating storm. >> reporter: now the hard work begins, cleaning up and making sure everyone is safe. as far as the clean up is concerned, it will take months to get back to normal. reporting live in cape may, new

jersey, i'm danielle leigh, back to you. a tall ship crew member with ties to california. the coast guard says 42-year-old claudene christian died at the hospital after being in the waters off the coast of north carolina monday evening. christian graduated from usc. 14 other crew members were rescued from the "hms bounty." the coast guard is still looking for the ship's captain. we have scary video here. a crane topples over. it is still dangling from the luxury high-rise in new york city. emergency crews say the crane is too dangerous at this point to remove. surrounding streets and buildings have been evacuated as a precaution out there. in anticipation of the winds around the city, the city put all construction work to a stop ahead of the storm. they asked all contractors and property owners to secure local

sites. we have more incredible pictures to show you. a surveillance camera capturing water. this is the park. this is water gushing through the streets and three paths from the train station from hoboken, new jersey and other train administrati stations in new jersey and new york are closed. some of the boards here are destroyed. piles of debris everywhere. in baltimore, maryland, along the waterfront at the inner harbor, superstorm sandy left it covered in water. drivers could not use the road until just about two hours ago. they had to give time for the water there to recede. we can tell you sandy dumping heavy snow on parts of west virginia. snowshoe is completely covered.

more than a foot of snow hit hard by sandy. one woman, sadly, reported dead here as a result of a traffic accident. more than 128,000 people in west virginia remain without power. here is a look at the height of the superstorm as it rolled through point pleasant beach, new jersey last night. the surge came through like a raging river flooding streets, homes and neighborhoods. a mandatory evacuation order was issued for that area. what a difference a day makes. the morning. here is a look at the very same area. homes heavily damaged or destroyed on point pleasant beach, new jersey. superstorm sandy took down the dunehat protected all of those properties. the west coast feeling the effects of the storm. so far, more than 100 flights canceled in and out of sfo. some simply chose to sleep at airport.

we have city have stephanie wit latest. >> reporter: at least one flight headed to boston was able to leave on time this morning. some positive news, of course, because some airports were open, but not flying people in and out on the side of safety. still good news. passengers we caught up with were struggling this morning to leave the area. >> as we live on the water. everybody had to evacuate. the south shore. there's a lot of trees down and devastating winds. everything is a mess. >> reporter: it was a must have business meeting that brought marty and colleagues to san francisco. getting back home was an even more desperate effort. >> it is an anxiety. i know my house will be under water and my son's house will be under water. we hope for the best. >> hell. no other word.

hell. i have a wife at home. >> reporter: he spent the morning changing the flight. >> our flight was supposed to leave at 6:00 now. that was to chicago. now we're trying another option to go to l.a. we're changing. okay. we're going back to l.a. >> l.a. to new york tomorrow. >> reporter: with an average of a dozen delays on a good day. there have been 1,400 canceled flights. most of them between sfo and the northeast airport. the couple more than a fluke. >> i live in san diego. expect the best weather in the whole united states. it is fogged in. that is crazy. >> reporter: it has been crazier for the two who are bracing themselves for what they will see when they get home hopefully tomorrow afternoon. >> we can fix the property. that is not the issue. everybody has to be safe. that's all we're praying for.

>> reporter: back here live at the board. you can see the jfk flights say they are on time. those are for tonight. officials say expect those to change to canceled for new york airports. the one silver lining is d.c. up to boston. those flights may bring flights in and depart. airlines may look to add flights tonight and red eye options. the best option for you as a passenger is to check directly with the airline. reporting live for nbc bay area news. >> stephanie, thanks. here in the bay area, we had nothing to complain about. just some fog. just some fog. we want to take a closer look at sandy and the projected path and intensity as we head through the next 48 hours. i want to start with some storm reports. new york, record storm surge. we saw the water come up 14 feet above sea level. also in new york, record wave at

32.5 feet. that is almost three stories high. record low pressure for a northeast storm. these are some of the record that have already come in. expect more to drop throughout the day. here is the latest look at sandy. it is packing winds of 45 miles per hour. it has dropped from 65-mile-an-hour sustained winds which we had four hours ago. as it continues to push over land, its moisture supply is getting cut off. it is weakening significantly. as we head through the next 48 hours, we will see this storm push into canada. this is what we're expecting. it will push westward across southern pennsylvania this afternoon. it should take a turn to western new york tonight and more into canada as we get into late wednesday. overall, we're talking about 8 million people without power. winds are still very strong. we're expecting those numbers to continue to go up and the damage is unprecedented at this point. we will cover this for you for

the next few weeks. >> we will keep you posted. moving on now to other news. san jose investigators are sorting out what sparked a fire on the home on linda flora street. the one-alarm fire happened after 6:00 this morning. a family was evacuated from the home. the good news is no one was hurt. the fire caused heavy damage. firefighters are investigating a report of an explosion at the home. the man accused of abducting and killing sierra lamar is expected back in court this afternoon. it is still unclear whether he will waive his right to appear. garcia torres is accused of abducting lamar back in march. he was charged with murder although her body was never found. we are back to sandy. sandy affecting late night tv. jimmy fallon in front of an

empty audience. i'm bob redell. i'll have everything you need to know if you want to attend the parade tomorrow. the dow is not up or down. the markets are closed for the second straight day. we will take a look at that in business news. marla mentioned to fog out there. there it is. low hanging clouds over the san mateo bridges. christina loren will be back to fill us in on the local weather forecast. looking good for tomorrow's parade. hang in there.

another element that sandy is affecting is the presidential campaign now just seven days away. >> campaigns are on hold because of the superstorm.

tracie potts has that side of the story. >> reporter: instead of campaigning today as planned, president obama is at the white house and warning americans. >> please listen to what the state and local officials are saying. when they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. >> reporter: he declared emergencies in eight states, plus washington, d.c. before the storm. virginia and west virginia were added early this morning along with the first federal disaster areas. new jersey and new york. with the president busy in washington, clinton filled in for a rally in ohio. >> he said this storm is out of hand. i have to handle it. i said, mr. president, that is the right call. >> reporter: governor mitt romney is at a rally in ohio today. he is urging supporters to donate. >> swing by. give a hand. >> make sure we do our best to help those impacted by the

storm. >> anything he says injects politics into it. and so you want to be careful if you're the romney team to keep an eye on it, obviously. but don't necessarily try to get in front of the story. >> reporter: one week before the election, polls are tied, but campaigning at a standstill. >> i'm not worried at this point about the impact on the election. i'm worried about the impact on the families. >> reporter: tracie potts, nbc news, washington. the stock markets are closed for the second straight day. scott mcgrew says officials at the two largest exchanges are working hard to make sure the shutdown does not extend to a third consecutive day. >> good morning. if the markets were closed tomorrow, that would be a problem. tomorrow is the last day of the month. the day the books are closed on stock contracts and portfolios. the nyse is running tests on the

secondary system just in case the closure lasts through a third day. they will be able to make the trades they need to tomorrow. this really isn't a computer issue as much as a people issue. you can't get in or out of lower manhattan. streets closed and mass transit is shutdown. now the u.s. department of labor has updated us this morning saying it will release the october jobs numbers as scheduled. remember, this will be the last time we will see those all important numbers before the presidential election. those will come on friday. hopefully everything back to normal by then. back to you. >> all right. scott mcgrew, thank you for the update. we are dealing with fog in the bay area. let's go to christina loren with the update. >> san francisco is known for fog. we will see the sun come out. it will take a couple of hours in the city. by 1:00 p.m., it will be clearing. you can see that vividly.

in san raphael, you are seeing complete sunshine. we are waiting for the sunshine in san jose. 58 degrees in san jose because of the low clouds. it's chilly for now. we have high pressure still very strong and that's going to bring your numbers up toward the 70s. it will be comfortable today once we get rid of the fog. we will get rid of the fog except santa rosa. you have pockets of .50 of visibility. you want to travel carefully. 77 in livermore. 71 in fremont. 71 in san jose. 68 in san francisco. we will get more of a trick than a treat with the halloween forecast. showers on the way. sun goes down at 6:30. that's when kids like to go out. you probably want to make plans that are early this year. we stop the clock at 5:00 p.m. moderate rainfall. showers north of the golden gate

bridge. we continue the futurecast at 6:00. it is getting slick between san francisco and san mateo. no showers expected in san jose to fremont and palo alto. stop it again for you at k9 00 p.m., everybody's getting wet at that point. the rule is you want to get your trick-or-treating done early. we will meet back here at 11:00 on thursday. we're done with the showers. it works like this. 66 degrees by thursday. sunny finish on friday. saturday will be nice. that sun will come out after we get rid of dense fog in the morning hours. the best part of the weekend, guys, we fall back. it is time for the time change. we get to fall asleep for an additional hour for this one. >> that's an early christmas gift. >> bringing us to smiles. >> all day long. this morning, san francisco is working nonstop to get ready for the world series parade. >> the celebrations could attract more than 1 million

fans. be ready for it. bob redell is live at the civic center plaza with what is being done to make sure tomorrow goes off very smoothly. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon and marla. it is crunch time because there is less than 24 hours before this celebration. the city is expecting, as you mentioned, over 1 million people along the parade route. you can imagine come tomorrow morning, it will be prime real estate jammed with people trying to get a glimpse of the world champs from the steps of city hall. the ticker tape parade starts at 11:00 a.m. unlike 2010, it will start at the foot of market and work up market and take a right at mcalister and finish in the place whe plaza. workers must install all of the barricades. that is a task considering there are 6,000 steel barricades that

must go up on market street and civic center plaza. as hard as a gig this is, workers could not be prouder. >> not only am i a fan, but show my love and respect for the team. >> it's exciting for me. i'm a giants fan. to be part of it is awesome. >> reporter: the city is expecting a crowd similar to the one in size a couple of years ago. we're talking about 1 million people jammed in downtown san francisco. if you are thinking about coming into the city, it will be difficult trying to get here. first off, transit agencies suggest you buy your ticket now. b.a.r.t. will be running on a rush hour schedule. muni will reroute lines. they have a lot of lines up and down market that will be impacted. they will add shuttle buses. golden gate transit will have buses. by the way, caltrain will be running additional trains as well. if you do have to be downtown,
